Manchester Memorial Hospital • Spring 2014
Health news
T
HE NUMBERS are telling: every minute someone
dies from coronary heart disease, making it the
leading cause of death in the United States. More
than 630,000 people die from heart disease each year—
that’s more than 1 in every 4 deaths in the U.S.
Throughout February 2014, Manchester Memorial Hos-
pital supported American Heart Month through various
community programs, events and classes. Endorsed by Con-
gress and the president, American Heart Month is dedicated
to building awareness about and eliminating heart disease.
Our efforts to help included:
Heart Up:
A giant 8-foot heart was displayed on the
hospital premises.
Go RED Day:
In honor of American Heart Month,
the hospital encouraged all employees and the community
to wear red on Friday, February 7, at the GO RED event
across the facility. We also held a competition on our Face-
book page and gave away free haircuts, dyes and facials to
the winners.
Free screenings:
Our Mission in Motion unit traveled to
area schools and businesses to perform free cholesterol and
blood pressure checks.
HEART HEALTH
Leading by example
Healthy RED dishes in the cafeteria:
The Terrace Café
at the hospital incorporated a heart-healthy red dish in their
menu every day for the whole month.
Leading by example:
We advocated heart health within
the hospital with our month-long “Take the stairs” chal-
lenge for employees.
How did you improve your heart health this February?
