Manchester Memorial Hospital • Spring 2012
Interested in learning about hospital programs outside
the typical hospital setting? Check out a few of the
things our community outreach team has planned for
2012 and how you can participate.
Mission in Motion
In March, our Mission in Motion (MIM) mobile health unit rolled out its
free monthly screenings for 2012. Screenings provide individuals with
an indication of their overall health, tools to manage their health, and
instructions for addressing any health concerns with their healthcare
provider. Check your local newspaper for screening dates.
Spring Health Fair
Memorial’s Spring Health Fair will be on Tuesday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to
2 p.m. at EKU Manchester. A variety of health screenings will be performed
(including glucose, cholesterol and bone density), along with opportuni
ties to speak with health representatives from all parts of the community.
Live It Up!
Our Live It Up! program is designed to give school children a combination
of nutritional education, behavior modification counseling and cardio
vascular exercise. Live It Up! will host a free summer camp in Clay County
for children, ages 7 to 11. The camp is scheduled for July 23 to 27 at Clay
County Middle School.
Wellness challenges at your workplace
Worksite wellness challenges are available for local businesses. These
challenges provide employees with general health screenings and follow-up
visits to assess their improvement. Our community outreach team can help
you create a fun challenge to motivate your employees to become healthy.

C
HOOSING A DOCTOR can sometimes be
a daunting task—especially if you’re look-
ing for one that can manage your overall
healthcare needs.
One option is an internist. These physicians treat
only adults, from the teen years through old age.
Internists are also called doctors of internal medicine.
(They should not be confused with interns, who are
in their first year of training after medical school.)
Internists take care of the patient as a whole,
working to prevent illness as well as to diagnose and
treat it. That includes both common and complex
problems. For example, internists treat illnesses from
simple infections to cancer or heart disease. They
can also treat substance abuse and mental illness.
Internists don’t, however, deliver babies or perform
surgery.

Extending healing beyond hospital walls
A
S A PART of Adventist
Health System, Memorial
Hospital is committed to
extending the healing ministry of
Christ—both within hospital walls
and without.
Memorial and the Seventh-day
Adventist (SDA) church of Manchester
were blessed to join with other
volunteers to provide repairs to several
homes in the area in the fall of 2011.
Over 100 volunteers poured into the
SDA church, SDA Community Center,
and hospital housing—making their
beds on the floor with sleeping bags
and other nontraditional bedding.
Alan Craig and Pastor Don Keele Jr.
in cooperation with the Plant Services
Department of Memorial Hospital
orchestrated a jammed-pack week of
work, worship and fellowship.
“Our goal is teaching our young
people service and skills that they can
use later in life,” says Craig, program
director.
The group worked on several proj-
ects, including roof and porch repair
in the Red Bird and Ulysses Creek
area, along with many hours of work
at the hospital and school.
“As pastor of the church, I would
like to thank this group for bring-
ing such a spiritual blessing to the
community and the church,” says
hospital Chaplain Mark Laws. “Many
neighbors have commented on how

helpful, hardworking and polite these
young people were. Their ministry was
inspirational to one and all.”
