Hospital happenings
Introducing our new leaders
In 2012, a variety of leadership changes have taken
place within Manchester Memorial Hospital, begin-
ning with the announcement of retirement by current
President/CEO Dennis Meyers.
“Dennis has served at this hospital since 1996, and for
the past 12 years as president/CEO,” says Jimm Bunch,
board chairman of Manchester Memorial Hospital and
president/CEO of the Adventist Health System (AHS) Ap-
palachia Region, which Manchester Memorial is a part
of. “He leaves a legacy of solid financial performance,
strong physician recruitment and a commitment to fos-
tering community partnerships for the hospital. I wish
the Lord’s blessings on him and his family as they enjoy
this new chapter of their lives.”
Erika Skula,
future president/CEO
Upon Dennis’ retirement announce-
ment, AHS sought out a new CEO to
replace him and named Erika Skula,
the hospital’s then chief financial officer (CFO) and
chief operating officer (COO), as his replacement. Skula
has served in multiple roles at our hospital since 2001,
including controller and CFO. Last year she took on the
additional responsibility of COO. Prior to joining the hos-
pital, Skula served as chairman of the Business and Com-
munication Department at Kingsway College in Oshawa,
Ontario, Canada, from 1988 to 2000. She graduated from
Andrews University in Michigan and holds a bachelor’s
degree and a master’s degree in business administration.
“Erika’s performance has been exceptional during
her tenure here at Manchester Memorial, and she has
the strong support of the hospital employees, medi-
cal staff, community partners and leaders at Adventist
Health System. Please join me in congratulating her as
she begins her transition to the permanent president/
CEO role,” Bunch says.
Daniel T. Walker, CFO
In April 2012, Daniel T. Walker
became the new vice president of
finance/CFO for the hospital. Walker
has worked in Adventist Health
System for more than 13 years, serving in a variety
of finance positions, including controller and, most
recently, regional finance director at Park Ridge Health
in Hendersonville, NC.
Hospital building update
The hospital’s four-story addition is progressing well. The project is on target
both within the scheduled timeline and the financial budget. The main super-
structure of the building is complete, and the installation of the roofing
sub-base and insulation has begun. The overhead rough-in of mechanical,
plumbing and electrical systems has started where fireproofing is complete.
The chillers (air conditioners) have been set in place, and the crew is working on
the chiller piping. Exterior sheathing has started, which allows the work on the
exterior insulation and finishing system (EIFS) to begin as well. The hospital is
very pleased to announce that additional funding of $2 million has been
approved to complete the Emergency Department renovations, which are
expected to start this summer.
M
EMORIAL HOSPITAL has once again earned
the Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by
demonstrating compliance with The Joint Com-
mission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety
in hospitals. The accreditation award recognizes Memorial
Hospital’s dedication to continuous compliance with The
Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.
The hospital underwent a rigorous, unannounced on-site
survey in March. Expert surveyors evaluated Memorial
Hospital for compliance with standards of care specific to
the needs of patients—including infection prevention and
control, leadership, and medication management.

Memorial Hospital earns accreditation award
Memorial Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to
the highest level of care for its patients,” says Mark Pelletier,
RN, MS, executive director, Hospital Programs, Accredita-
tion and Certification Services with The Joint Commission.
“Accreditation is a voluntary process, and I commend Me-
morial Hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge
to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the
community it serves.”
The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address
important functions relating to
patient care and hospi-
tal management. The
standards are developed
in consultation with
healthcare experts,
providers, measure-
ment experts and
patients.
